Light in the Mess: Finding Joy in Chaos
There are days when the noise of family life feels louder than anything else. The missing shoes, the clashing moods, the overlapping schedules—it all swirls together until my heart feels just as tangled as my home. And in those moments, I wonder: Where is joy supposed to fit in this chaos?
One line from Scripture offers an anchor: “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” (1 Corinthians 14:33).
Joy Through God’s Peace
One of the devotions in Light in the Mess begins with these words: “Sometimes family life feels chaotic—shoes go missing, schedules overlap, moods collide. Yet even in the disorder, God is weaving His peace.”
Those lines stop me every time, because they remind me that peace isn’t the absence of noise or clutter. It’s the presence of God in the middle of it. His peace doesn’t always change my circumstances, but it softens my heart in the midst of them.
Peace, I’m learning, is not about having everything in its place. It’s about letting God place Himself at the center of it all. Just as Jesus calmed the storm with a word, He can speak calm into my inner storm—when frustration rises, when my voice sharpens, when my patience runs dry.
And joy? Joy begins to flicker to life right there, in the moment of surrender. Not when everything is fixed or tidy, but when I remember: God is here. God is steady. God is peace.
If you’ve been longing for joy but can’t seem to find it in your busy days, take heart. Joy isn’t hiding on the other side of order—it’s offered to you in the mess, because God’s presence is steady even when life is not.
That’s the heartbeat of Light in the Mess: to remind weary mamas like us that God is not a God of confusion but of peace. Each devotion offers Scripture, gentle reflection, and encouragement for those moments when you need light most—not later, but right now, in the middle of the noise.
So if your days feel heavy or jumbled, I invite you to join me in looking for joy here—in the cracks, in the quiet pauses, in the presence of the One who speaks peace into our chaos.
