Everyday Saints: Parents as First Catechists

As October draws to a close, I’ve been thinking about the quiet, hidden work of parenthood. Most of my days don’t feel holy—they feel ordinary. Packing lunches, refereeing sibling fights, washing another sink full of dishes. Yet beneath all that repetition lies a truth that humbles me: these small acts, done in love, are forming faith.

The Church often speaks of parents as the “first catechists” of their children. That phrase used to intimidate me. It made me picture a teacher in front of a classroom, chalk in hand, perfectly prepared with answers. I don’t feel like that kind of parent most days. I feel clumsy, unsure, too quick to raise my voice, too tired to plan another activity.

But maybe being a catechist at home doesn’t mean being polished or perfect. Maybe it means living faith in the cracks of daily life. Whispering a prayer while stirring the soup. Speaking a verse when a child is afraid. Asking forgiveness after I’ve snapped. These are the lessons my children carry—not because they are scripted, but because they are real.

Saints weren’t people who lived tidy, flawless lives. They were people who let God shape them in the midst of ordinary struggles. And maybe that’s the invitation for us too: to see our parenting as a saint-making ground. Not just for our children, but for ourselves.

Every time we choose patience over frustration, every time we admit our need for grace, every time we show love in the smallest act—we are teaching the catechism of the heart. And though it feels hidden, heaven sees it.

So, mama, if you end this month feeling weary, unsure, or a little frayed at the edges, remember this: your ordinary faithfulness matters. You are the first witness of God’s love to your children. You don’t need to be perfect; you only need to keep pointing back to the One who is.I’d love to know—where have you seen God at work in your family’s rhythm this month?
